Yacon Syrup.

Yacon is a sweet tasting root vegetable or tuber that has been grown in the Andes of Peru for thousands of years.  yacon syrup is extracted from the yacon roots. Fresh yacon has a pleasant slightly sweet flavour and crispy texture that has been compared to apples and watermelons.  Yacon roots contain mostly water and a special type of healthy sugar called Fructooligosacharides (FOS).

Yacon syrup is a delicious sweetener that is extracted from the yacon roots.  Scientists and health conscious eaters are excited about the properties of yacon because it has very few calories and low sugar levels making it suitable for diabetics, dieters, people with candida overgrowth and those who want to avoid sugar. The sugar in yacon root and syrup consists primarily of fructooligosacharides (FOS).  These sugars are not digested by the body and therefore yacon is great for calorie reduced and low sugar diets.

FOS is also a prebiotic which helps create a healthy bacterial probiotic environment in the gut.  FOS also contains fiber which helps to prevent constipation and keeps the colon functioning well.  FOS has also been shown in animal studies to promote calcium absorption, reduce cholesterol levels and strengthen the immune system.

The taste is very caramelly akin to molasses syrup. Unfortunately it is rather expensive, you can buy it here.

I just can’t get enough of this stuff! You can make your own or buy it from your health food shop. I prefer the Co-Yo brand which is made here locally.

In an attempt at keeping my hands busy, rather than putting food into my mouth, I decided to try the art of Amigurumi.

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed animals or creatures. The word is derived from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll. Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features, as is typical in Japanese culture. I saw a lot on my travels in Japan last year, and while I am not a cutesy, doll type or “girly” person, I was inspired by the trend. I have not done much crocheting apart from granny squares at school, I am mainly a knitter, so this was a new learning curve for me!

I discovered this GLASS water bottle at a new health food shop recently and it was love at first sight. No plasticky taste, no BPA’s and no hot metal!!

I don’t know enough about this new fangled anti-oxidant but I do know that I like it’s pungent tangy taste!! And it colours things such a brilliant purple. It is a dark purple berry that grows wild throughout the southern rainforests of Chile and Argentina.  The indigenous Mapuche Indians of southern Chile have eaten the berries for thousands of years and to this day remain the largest commercial harvesters of maqui in the world.  Though research on the berry is limited, so far it is promising to be the new superfood of 2013. It is high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar balancing, and antibacterial. I need to do more of my own research on this one..

And finally the mostest delicious discovery I made: Coconut nectar! It still has plenty of calories but has lots of minerals and nutrients. With a GI of 35, it is a lot less than sugar but more than Yacon. It is light and caramelly and golden syrupy. I use it on anything & everything – I love it! Read more about it here.

    Thanks for your deodorant research. All the natural alternatives are so overpriced. I recommend adding some magnesium phosphate solution. It kills any odour producing bacteria and you get a daily dose of magnesium at the same time. I bought some Sukin natural deodorant in a spray bottle and mixed it 50:50 with magnesium phosphate. I then recycled a glass roll on deodorate bottle (Discount Chemist, cheap Nivea for $2). A hundred percent magnesium phosphate feels a bit tacky, but this this mix works great as a roll on.

    “Wow!” Thank you, will have to try some of these.
    I have discovered Chia seeds, still not sure if i like them yet,
    i tried them the first time with peanut butter, nearly made me gag ;0(
    i am going to soak some in lite coconut cream tonight ;0)
    i have recently developed GORD so not a lot i can stomach atm

      Hi Julie
      Chia seeds are so versatile. You can soak them for the gel as an egg replacer or grind them and use them as a binder or protein additive. I use them like I use poppy seeds, for extra crunch!!
