Chow down at Fogo De Chao

I had never been to a Brazilian restaurant before last night and it was truly a fun experience. Think: yum cha × steak house × sizzler with 5  stars and you got it in one!

We were guests of a local, and this was his favorite haunt. Given that his wife is a vegetarian, and he, an avid meat fan, it is little wonder he saved himself for the feast awaiting.

It went like this:

On arrival, we were shown the salad buffet, which included many imported cheeses, smoked salmon and charcuterie, then given a green cardboard dot, the size of a small coaster, for go! (Above)

Within minutes of showing green, sword wielding staff accosted you laden with meat, 15 different cuts  and offered you a slice. Curiously varied in cooking degree, you could choose how you wanted it cooked from the same piece!

Who would complain about service from these sexy boys?! If you didn’t flip your dot over to red, they kept coming,  on and on, relentlessly, forever, and ever……so you learnt very quickly to flip your dot as soon as you sampled a piece, otherwise the barrage would not stop!

The salad buffet was always available – but they also brought side dishes to the table: garlic mash, fried polenta, cheese gougiere, sweet sticky sauteed bananas (!) And a vinegary chimichurra salsa.

The beer and wine flowed  and fun was to be had by all. It is definitely not for the feint hearted and over indulging is a given. It sort of sounds quite obscene but interestingly it was very well organized and really really good quality – 5 star.

Dessert pushed us over the edge, alot of the US venues we visited pre-plated the final course (something we thankfully stopped doing in the 80’s in  Oz) and here was no exception. A strange concoction of fresh papaya & cream was served, almost like a smoothie, but topped with creme de cassis, it was light and not too sweet. Pogo de chao was truly a very enjoyable and novel experience, thank you Simon & Yolanda!
